Sunday 7th October – Canterbury Mini Festival.
The long wait for contact rugby was finally over as we headed off to Canterbury with a good training performance the previous week at Thanet behind us.
The opening match of the group stage saw us run out comfortable winners 5 – 3 against Sittingbourne with some decent rugby being played. The ball was being passed around, tackles being counted and we seemed to have got the hang of rucking at last.
The second game saw us play against Blackheath who looked strong and determined. The game was played at a fast pace and evenly contested between the two. Blackheath eventually ran out winning 1 - 4. The coaching staff of Blackheath committing afterwards that the score did not reflect the match and they were impressed with how we played.
Into the final match of the group stages saw us pit our wits against Folkestone. We both needed to win to go through the group stage as Blackheath topped the group. A very hard fought end to end game with the lead changing hands a number of times. But D&B held firm and ran in a winning try at the death for us to edge through to the 3rd / 4th play off place.
In our final game we were up against Ashford who in tag rugby proved to be our nemesis. I along with the parents had high hopes for this last match but it was not to be as everything we had worked so hard for up to this game disappeared and our nemesis ran out a victory.
Overall me and the coaches were very pleased that what we have been learning on the training pitch was paying off in the matches. It was also nice to receive comments from other teams and referees on how well we were playing.
So our first trophy of the season sits proudly behind the bar at the clubhouse with the hope there are many more to follow this season.
