The Lions had a much-improved side from the previous week at Sheppey, with two of our Servicemen home for the week-end and other players able to be at the ground for the match . East Peckham had a big pack of forwards and some useful backs, so a good game was in prospect .
The early exchanges were even, and both sides converted penalties , the Lions’ by Matt McKay .
Gradually, however, the Home forwards began to gain good ball in the set scrums and better possession in the rucks . Michael Rowarth at Scrum-Half was lively and the backs began to attack . However, some poor passing and handling wasted several chances and tries went begging .
Then the forwards put in some good drives, and from the ensuing play two tries were scored, one by Dan Atkinson at No 8 and the other by Rowarth . McKay converted a try .
At Half-Time the score was 15 – 3 to the Lions .
The game continued in the same vein and the Lions looked to be the fitter side. Further tries were scored after hard running and a drive by Mitch Halpin and Gavin Elsam showed his class with two further tries . McKay converted one .
So a good victory was gained and The Club hope that a similar good side can be fielded for next week’s away match against Weavering, which is likely to be a hard contest .
