It was a horrible day at the Drill Field ! Fine rain, driven by a very cold West wind made life very unpleasant for players and spectators . The muddy pitch did not make for fast, open rugby, and dictated a mainly forward game . This nullified the opportunities for the competitive Lions’ backs and played to Aylesford’s strength in their pack .
However, The Lions drove the ball to the Aylesford 25 metre area and kept the pressure on . McGrath and Cowen at Wing-Forward enjoyed the conditions and kept the opposing Half-Backs under pressure . Line-outs were quite difficult in the strong wind and quite even, but John Stabler did manage to secure the Aylesford ball and make some good drives into the defence . Throughout the game, the knowledgeable members of the Aylesford pack withstood numerous drives by the Lions . However, the pressure told and a good push-over try was touched down by Sam Hanley . Aylesford responded with a penalty goal and in the second Half of the Game, try as they might, the Lions backs could make little headway against some good Aylesford defence .
The Lions pack kept the Visitors in their half for most of the second part of the Game . Eventually, the pack drove over the line, Matt Curd touching-down the try .
Connor Moss added a penalty goal and the pressure was resumed .
Towards the end of the game, Anthony Hart placed a clever, skidding kick to the right corner , which was miss-fielded and Matt Halpin skilfully dribbled the ball over the line and scored . Moss kicked a very good conversion .
It was not a ‘pretty game’ but nevertheless a useful victory, which brought the Lions to 5th in the Table .
