Excellent Victory By The Lions
The Lions played host to 3rd place Maidstone at the Drill Field on Saturday knowing they had to be on top form to take anything from this match.
Following the strong performance against Charlton Park the previous week and with the Captain, Adam Michael and Wade Roberts back from injury, the Lions started this important match on a bright day with eager intent . Maidstone had inflicted a heavy defeat earlier in the season with a powerful display from their strong pack and centre threequarters and the intention by The Lions was to deny them the same initiative .
The Home forwards contested the scrums and line-outs well and held their taller and heavier opponents , while giving their backs the opportunity to attack . After gaining good territorial possession, Connor Moss kicked a good penalty . This was followed by further attacks, with strong running by Robinson from deep and Adam Michael finally scored out wide with an excellent try .
Maidstone came back with some strong play and provoked stout defence from the Lions . The forward battle went to and fro, with both packs winning some good lineout ball in close contests .
Stone and Hanley carried the ball well in counter attacks and Gavin Elsam again anticipated the Maidstone thrusts well and tackled fiercely .
Eventually the Maidstone right wing went over for a good try after several attacks on the Lions’ defence to end the half at 8 -5 points.
Maidstone resumed the game with vigour and only good defence kept them from a further score . The Visitors had territorial advantage for much of this half, and kicked two penalties to one reply by Moss to level the scores .
However, The Lions did not give up and came back strongly at the end of the game to make several thrusts, pinning Maidstone into a desperate defence . In the end, Luke Armstrong, who had his best game for a while, surged over for a try which gave the Lions an important victory .
The large crowd was entertained with a vigorous, close and entertaining match .
