However, this is not a Lions side of fragile spirit and after sustaining a series of strong attacks from the Home side, a thrilling attacking thrust with swift running and inter-passing between backs and forwards was rewarded by a try out wide by Wade Roberts, a second –row forward, who sprinted 10 yards for the touch-down.
The game continued at a good pace and both sides battled hard for possession, with the Lions pack again contesting the set-pieces and rucks well against a side with a big, strong pack with fast backs to exploit any weakness.
Then Carl Thatcher, chasing a kick-ahead with gusto took advantage of a favourable bounce and forced his way past the remaining defenders to score near the posts .John Sheehan converted .
The game continued at pace and in an attack which incorporated good inter-passing with speed resulted in the fast and determined Luke Armstrong crossing for another try . Thus the score was 17 – 10 to the Visitors at Half-time .
Brighton came out for the second half in determined fashion and again the contest was fierce.
Having held off several attacks by the Brighton backs, a kick ahead was shepherded over the goal-line but an awkward bounce just eluded the touchdown in goal and the Brighton wing pounced to score . An unfortunate mistake .
Brighton brought on several good replacements and in a series of untidy scrums near the Lions line, the referee penalised the Visitors for preventing the scrum, though it was not at all clear as to who was at fault and awarded Brighton a penalty try, which was most unfortunate .
The final try was a very good individual effort by the lively Brighton Scrum-half ,which ended a hard-fought and interesting game .
Brighton are top of the League and the game was always going to be a good contest . Three very young players , Sam Ludwig, Eoin McGrath and Ben Ebden were introduced as substitutes and it to their credit that they played so well , with strong nerve . The Lions had several experienced players absent with injury or because of work, John Harrington, Nathan Mitford and Ali Chamberlain .
However , this was a good game ,which brought out many positive points and we thank Brighton for their hospitality .
