Deal and Betteshanger home fixture against bottom club Old Mid-Whitgiftian was one that had to be won to have any hope of surviving in the league

Even with a win the Lions would have to then depend on other results going their way in games being played on the same day and the final league fixtures on April the 14th.
The first part of the mission was accomplished with some ease as they notched up sixty unanswered points against the visitors. Old Mid-Whitgiftian started the game by exerting some early pressure but were unable to find any openings in a solid Lions defence.
The homeside moved ahead in the twelfth minute when Fly Half Ollie Best slotted a difficult 45 metre penalty. It was evident from the first scrum that the visitors were going to have difficulties in this area of the game with the Lions front row proving far too powerful for the opponents. The homeside extended the lead when second row Wesley Bull showed good strength to drive over in the left corner following a driving maul. 8-0 to the Lions.
The visitors possessed a couple of dangerous runners in their ranks with the fullback and outside centre showing pace and skill with limited opportunities. The Lions increased their lead with Open side Flanker Sam Cullis finishing off some good work by the forwards to score wide out on the right. Ollie Best converting the difficult kick. 15-0 to the Lions.
The signs for Old Mid-Whitgiftian looked ominous as the homeside raised the tempo of the game. Fly Half Ollie Best, who was imperious form with both the boot and with ball in hand, carved out the opening for the next try scored by Luke Armstrong. Best converting for a 22-0 Lead at the break.
With two tries in the bag at half time the Lions target was at least another two which would give them a bonus point. This goal was easily achieved as they completely overrun the visitors in the second period running in seven tries. To their credit Old Mid-Whitgiftian never gave up trying but with the tackle count mounting, they inevitably tired, leaving gaps. The first score of the half was a brilliant individual try from man of the match Ollie Best who completely bamboozled the opposing defence with a dummy and side step to score near the posts. He converted his own try. 29-0 to the Lions.
Further tries followed at regular intervals. No 8 Joseph Hinkins charging over from short range following good work by the pack. Best adding the conversion. Young Aaron Moss was next on the score sheet after being put through by Adam Michael. Best converting. 43-0 to the Lions.
Old Mid-Whitgiftian were now chasing shadows . Their tired defence wilting under the constant pressure put on them by a rampant Lions side. Fly Half Ollie Best added a further 7 points to his tally with another try and conversion.
The final two tries were both scored following good work by the pack. The first saw them winning good ball on halfway allowing Adam Michael to make ground before feeding wing Nathan Mitford who made good ground brushing off two tackles before timing a lovely inside pass to Michael who crossed wide out.
The final score of the day was the result of a fine individual try by lock forward Dan Atkinson, who gathering ball on halfway saw him streak 40 meters, and when it looked as though he was about to be caught, a stop inside saw him wrong foot the chasing player to cross wide out on the left. This much needed victory was the result of a fine 15 man team effort. Proving a personal triumph for Ollie Best, who enjoyed a 23 point haul.
The result, plus the away game at Heathfields & Waldron on the 14th of April will decide the clubs future in London South East two, or otherwise.
