The Lions Put in an Outstanding Performance

An outstanding first-half display inspired Deal & Betteshanger to their biggest victory of the season

The Lions went into the match on the back of a six-game losing streak but blew fellow strugglers Bromley away by racing into a 33-0 half-time lead at the Drill Field.
The win moved them six points clear of their nearest rivals and interim coach Gregor Dougall said the performance showed the value of being positive.
Dougall, for whom the win was his first since succeeding Dave Wiggins, said: “The phrase we used this week was ‘attack, attack, attack’ and you could see the players had a real desire before the
game.
“You could see it in the way they were talking and in their body language. We did not give Bromley anything and the first half was probably the best half of rugby we have played this season.”
The opening try underlined the Lions’ ambition with Luke Armstrong running in after Lions skipper Adam Michael had opted to run the ball from a scrum in their own half
Joseph Hinkins, Sam Hanley and Kim Frost – courtesy of an interception – also scored tries with a fifth coming as a the result of a penalty try when Lions were on the Bromley line.
With Matt Halpin kicking four conversions, the game was effectively over by half-time but Bromley made a better fist of things in the second half, grabbing a consolation score only for Armstrong to run in another
long-range effort.
Dougall added: “It was an outstanding performance by all 18 players and Adam’s leadership was fantastic. It was his decision to run the ball for the first try and that was typical of his approach.”
Some of the gloss was taken off the day by Heathfield and Waldron’s surprise 19-13 home win over Charlton Park – a result which keeps them just ahead of the Lions – but the two teams meet in Sussex next month.
