The home side were just four points clear before scoring three tries in the final five minutes to secure their 12th straight win and preserve their 100% record.
Deal coach Dave Wiggins was delighted with his team’s performance which also drew praise from his Medway counterpart Taff Gwilliam, whose team also won their last six games of last season.
Wiggins said: “It’s not often you get an opposition coach come to the team huddle and and say ‘well played lads.’
“He (Taff) told our boys it was the toughest game they’d had all season and said they could all leave with their heads held high.”
Deal blooded former Snowdown pair Cary Jackson, at centre, and Leighton Docherty, in the back row, and both contributed to an excellent team performance.
The visitors also welcomed back Gavin Elsam – on leave from the Navy – and Kent under-20 back row Kieran Mckenzie, who was home from university, while switching Juan Batista Vila, from scrum-half to full-back also bore
dividends.A converted try and two penalties had Medway 13-0 ahead before Deal got on the scoresheet with a drive which was ended by Eoin McGrath. Eight points down at half-time, Deal cut the deficit to just a point when Jack Brazier’s try was well converted by Matt Halpin but a penalty stretched Medway’s lead to 16-12 before the hosts pulled away late on with three tries, two of which were
converted.
Wiggins added: “We played well and thought we might actually nick it but we gave away a couple of quick penalties and then they were in our half and it was all hands to the pump. They were the better team but if we play like that for the rest of the season, we’ll have no
problems.”
Deal have finished the first half the campaign ninth out of 12 and resume their programme on Saturday, January 7, when they host bottom club Crowborough, who have lost all 12 of their matches.
