The U10's chose to travel to Vigo this weekend over the option of the more locally held tournament in Thanet. This meant facing facing old Foe more usually encountered in upper years, Juniors, Colts and beyond. The Day started with a wet and windy drive North, continued to be wet, and finished a little wetter on the retreat from Battle heading South. The main constant of the day being a wet and "soft" pitch under foot, at times, Somme like!
The young Lions were first up and against Old Alleynians. A tough opposition and clearly well drilled. The first period was a close match with OA's just nipping the lead by 1 try in to half time. The second half both teams came out firing, but the OA attack was quick and ground on the D&B side, a few defensive errors allowed OA's to run in 4 more finishing 5-0 to Old Alleynians, the score didn't perhaps truly paint the picture, but a deserved win none the less
Second up came Gravesend. Another tough contest, but this time the 2 teams in contest were much more closely matched, beautiful rugby and from both sides fully on display. Gravesend went over first but was soon equalised by an in form H Tricky, with his second in 2 Matches. The Lions were fierce but codling quite make the leap to finish with a W. This one ended 3-1 against us
Third came Aylesford Bulls. By this point, it was hard for any match official to differentiate either team by their club colours and the ball was difficult to receive cleanly. Despite this Deal & Bettes soon had 2 put down over the line. The Bulls stayed in for a time, gaining 2 back on us, but strong physical efforts from A Warner and H Waters secured us 2 more. This one ended in ur favour 4-2
We were fixtures last agains Sevenoaks, a big club with a big squad. The Lions came out with their tales up after their previous win and played a smooth early game. With some big contests across the pitch, we went 1 try down early. However, we remained in the game and went in to the last half still in reach. Soon, from a monstrous drive, with close support welded on and attacking forwards move allowed S Watkins to break through and score. Despite the Lions high and gritty determination, the game ended 5-1 against.
A truly impressive day, the whole team, including recent additions is starting to gel now and the future of this side looks great. A huge thank you to all players, parents, coaches, endnote forgetting Kent Rugby and Vigo RFC for hosting, we hope to see you again soon and look forward to new fixtures next season.
