The Lions first XV welcomed Crowborough to the Den on Saturday. The Lion’s, despite several changes due to non-availability and injury, were in buoyant mood as they had not lost at home to “Boro” in recent years.
Despite many of the club travelling to Portsmouth for the annual RMBS memorial game and beer contest some 200 spectators had braved the heat to cheer on the Lions. As it turned out they were treated a spectacle of hard-fought rugby yielding 11 tries 4 to the Lions and 7 to the visitors.
After 7 minutes when “Boro” were deemed to have come in at the side and Ollie Best kicked the points (3-0). The visitors surged up the pitch however the smallest player on the pitch Jamie Talbot was carded for a high tackle against “Boro’s” 6ft+ Lock. To be fair to the merry whistle blower she was on the wrong side and some distance away. “Boro” duly got the resultant penalty (3-3)
At 17 minutes following some sharp handling the “Boro” pack muscled over for a Try but failed to add the extras (3-8)
A minute later “Boro” infringed again and Ollie Best kicked the resultant penalty (6-8)
The Visitors now began to control the game with their scrum beginning to gain the upper hand running in a further 3 converted try’s and awarded a penalty try for when Matt Curd was deemed to have killed the ball on the line.
Ollie Best kicked a further penalty before the half but Lions ended the half 9-36.
The Lions made a few changes at the half and clearly stern words were said. The Lions charged out of the blocks with Gavin Elsan ripping the ball out of the Crowborough locks hands in the air to set up some ferocious play resulting in Ben Locket Crossing the whitewash, with Ollie getting the extras (16-32).
The Lions were now getting some go forward ball through Jack Nye and Gavin Elsan leading to another crossing of the line by Ollie Best , who also got the extras. (22-36)
Crowborough scored a further 3 converted tries and a penalty (22-53)
The Lions continued to pressure the visitors scoring a further two tries, Carl Thatcher, and Ben Locket on ly one of which was converted giving the Lions a Try bonus point. Final score 35-53
