Close match goes the way of the Lions

Maidstone Colts v Deal and Betteshanger RFC Colts:

Deal and Betteshanger squad had been decimated by Covid and injuries and were short on numbers for their league fixture v Maidstone Colts. However, Maidstone very sportingly offered to match numbers and to even lend players if necessary to ensure the league fixture went ahead. A real example of sportsmanship.
Maidstone took an early lead despite the stalwart defence of the Lions scoring in the corner. There then followed a period of play in both halves of the pitch as the teams jostled for supremacy.
This was finally ended by Luca Twyman who cut through the Maidstone defence to score the first of his 3 trys. Luca then swiftly converted his own try taking the score to 5 – 7 to the Lions.
Maidstone responded immediately withl their own score and conversion taking them back in to the lead 12 – 7.
Luca Twyman gathered a return kick from Maidstone on his 22 line and ran the full length to score again under posts and again added the conversion. Score now 12 – 14. Not to be outdone, Finley Theaker decided it was time to get on the score board and picked the ball up from the base of a ruck and battered he was through to score in the corner for the Lions, score 12 -19.
The second half started brightly for the Lions with Luca Twyman and scoring under the posts, score 12 -24. Maidstone were quick to respond with a well worked try down the wing, score 17 -24.
The Lions next score game from a well worked try, with Sebastian Powell, playing 8 controlling the ball at the base of the scrum, Archie Grove, picked the ball, committed the defender and executed a perfectly timed pop pass to a charging Finley Theaker who barrelled over for another score. 17 – 31.
Archie Grove was next on the score sheet picking up from a ruck and stepping 2 defenders scored in the corner. 17 – 36. Lucas Halford-Dunn, making his debut for the Colts gathered a ball by his ankles and outpaced the defence to score under the posts , score 17 – 41. Another score by the Lions took the game beyond Maidstone despite a spirited final 10 mins. The match finished in the Lions favour 31 – 46.
