It was a lovely day and perhaps the sight of the sun after the dreadful weather we have suffered during the Winter had a relaxing effect on the players .
There was some good play by the side in the first half and importantly, Connor Moss gave by far his best place-kicking performance of the Season and kicked two penalties to steady the side and to give a basis on which to build . The pack gave a good performance in the set scrums , and again gained some good possession against a bigger pack . Most of the possession in the line-outs in the early contests was good, with quite accurate throwing – in and clean catching by Wade Roberts and John Harrington .
Colfeians kicked a penalty given for a high tackle, and also gave some good defence as the attacks from the Lions increased , especially with strong penetration in the centre . Eventually, Luke Armstrong scored a good try , which was converted by Moss .
The score at Half-time was 13 – 3 to the Home side .
The Coach rotated forward players , which did disrupt the smooth line-outs in some cases and not all the throw-ins were reaching their target . However, the loose scrums maintained the pressure on the Visitors but they defended well for the most part and indeed put the Lions defence under severe pressure . The Lions defence held and gradually weaknesses were detected in the opposition’s back line . Several good attacks came close but were spoiled by wayward final passes and catching, which was very frustrating for the spectators .
Wade Roberts was playing well and made a strong thrust for the line with a good chance for a try when he turned his ankle while attempting a ‘side-step’ and had to retire injured .
However, Connor Moss, having kicked another penalty, made a fine break 30 metres out from the tryline and ‘drifted on’ through for an excellent try . He duly converted it .
Thus The Lions continued their good victories but the side knows that on this occasion that they could have done even better . There is more to do !
The Old Colfeians were made welcome for the first time at ‘The Seaside’ and we look forward to seeing them next season .
