The Lions Maintain Their Excellent Home Form.
The Lions welcomed the Heathfield and Waldron Team to the Drill Field with our proud record of having conceded only one defeat at Home this Season.
The Home Team started quite well and showed early on that the set scrummaging had returned to a good level after the poor showing at Crowborough . Despite Heathfield having some big forwards and with Wade Roberts being still absent with injury, the coordinated shove gained control and some good ball was produced .This was to Scrum-Half Ollie Schofield’s liking .
However, Heathfield did gain some good ball from the line-outs and loose scrums and the game was even for the first period . Then, after a good bout of pressure and a scrum near the tryline in the corner, the pack drove over and Joseph Hinkins touched –down .
The Backs now started to get into their stride and with Martin Robinson making some telling incursions from deep, eventually a good attack from the 22 metre area ended with a good try by Left-Wing Carl Thatcher .
That opened floodgates and a strong run by Luke Armstrong ended in a try, converted by Connor Moss . Adam Michael wove through the Heathfield defence to score . In reply, Heathfield kicked two good penalties .
Ben Ebden, the Right Wing had to leave the field with an injury and Arron Moss took his place .
Half-time score : 22 – 6 to the Home side .
Heathfield turned round with intent and the two packs strove for superiority, and again some poor Lions line-out work allowed them some possession but the defence held firm . Again, the Lions’ pressure at the scrums led to further attacks by the backs and forwards and Armstrong again crossed for another try. That was followed by more attacks as Heathfield tired and good, quick passing allowed Wing-forward John Harrington to score an excellent try out wide .
Then another break by Armstrong, continued by Prop Sam Hanley, who selflessly gave a good pass to Dan Atkinson , who was supporting like all good Lock Forwards should, and he went over for the try . It was converted .
The defeat for Heathfield means that they are likely to be relegated from our League, which is a shame, as they are a good Club .
