A Much Needed Win

Deal & Betteshanger secured their fourth win on Saturday with a performance coach Dave Wiggins felt was worthy of a bigger winning margin.

Deal & Betteshanger secured their fourth win on Saturday with a performance coach Dave Wiggins felt was worthy of a bigger winning margin.
A late try by the visitors made the contest look closer than it was although Wiggins was happy enough with the afternoon’s work which gave a maximum five-point haul and a move two places up London 2 South East to eighth.
Wiggins said: “It was another good game but the score does not really reflect the game. It was one of those matches where I never thought we were going to lose. We frustrated them and forced them to kick the ball which is something we talked about before the game.
“We did a lot of things well and our defending was much more effective. Everything just seemed to be 20-30% better than last time.”
Wiggins said it was a performance in which everyone played their part but he did concede that Nick Tweed’s first try in 15 years of senior rugby was a nice moment, both for the front row man and his team-mates. No.8 Lenny Brown had opened the scoring, finishing off a powerful drive which had seen Heathfield pushed back 22 metres and with Connor Moss adding a penalty, the home side led 15-10 at
Moss had to leave the field midway through the first half when he damaged the same shoulder which has previously kept him out and that led to a reshuffle with Luke Armstrong moving to centre and Jack Browne coming at at full-back.
Skipper Adam Michael, playing at No.9 in the absence of Juan Batista Vila, provided the box kick which led to Matt Halpin’s try and good hands led to Jack Brazier going over on the left before another drive gave Brown his second score, converted by Halpin.
